Upstream from New Orleans along the Mississippi river in both Louisiana and Mississippi there a number of magnificent antebellum mansions. These originated either as plantation homes on sugar-cane or cotton plantations, or as the homes of merchants in Natchez who managed trade up and down the river and its tributaries.
